ABOUT ASPIRA of the MID-ATLANTIC

We provide supplementary non-formal education to students in middle school through graduate school and to their families and faculty members. We aim to boost students’ achievement and leadership skills and to increase family engagement with schools and community, leading to greater economic stability for our program participants. We share information with organizations with missions similar to ours. We offer advice on education issues to local and state education officials and agencies.

Our instructional priority centers on teaching in and through languages. English proficiency remains our foremost concern, given its strong link to academic achievement and economic opportunity. At the same time, we recognize that developing proficiency in home and additional languages, along with their associated traditions, can significantly enhance both academic and financial success while advancing state and national workforce development goals—making this our second instructional priority.

Our guidance functions focus on planning for the future and, in partnership with their families, on empowering at-risk and system-involved youth to lead productive, fulfilling lives.

Through issue advocacy, we work to orient policy makers to ways to ensure that all students maintain access to high-quality education, especially amid shifting policies and funding priorities.

For agencies and organizations: We review requests from entities which also serve students eligible for our services or serve parents of eligible students, such as publicly governed schools and school districts, consortia of rural districts, adult education programs, colleges and universities, other government agencies, Native American nations, parent organizations, faith-based groups, nonprofit organizations, professional organizations, senior centers, labor unions, and informal community groups.

Examples for students and their family and faculty members: 

For instructional programs, Middle and High School students whose most recent results on state developed or selected English Language Arts or English Proficiency standardized examinations are below the “Reaching” or the “Achievement Level 3” cut off scores are eligible for our services.

For Guidance programs, faculty members nominate participants in accordance with agreed upon program goals.

For world, Indigenous, dual, or heritage language programs, all students enrolled in or aspiring to enroll in such programs are eligible.

Until further notice, all services are delivered remotely. We can provide service anywhere in North or South Carolina that has internet access.

Our basic model is Fee for Service on plans customized for our clients. However,  in consideration of funding uncertainties currently experienced by education agencies, all our remote, communication, or sponsored programs during the 2025-26 school year will be provided free of charge to as many clients as our resources permit.
